About NIPFC

The idea to establish a Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO) originated with Dr. Stasia Kahn after having attended the American Standards Testing and Materials (ASTM) Continuity of Care meeting in Washington, D.C. in April of 2005. Dr. Kahn wanted to bring to Illinois the Healthcare Information Technology advances that have already been made elsewhere in the U.S. Dr. Kahn’s presentation to the DuPage Valley Physicians (DVP) Board of Directors along with the collaboration of its Technology Committee’s Chairperson, Dr. John Clancy resulted in DVP’s support to move forward on the physician driven RHIO. DVP, an Independent Practice Organization is the initial provider to lend resources towards the genesis of the Northern Illinois Physicians For Connectivity(NIPFC).

NIFPC aims to foster both a secure network for healthcare data exchange and a consortium for purchasing computer hardware, software, and IT consulting services. This dual purpose makes participation beneficial to medical practices that have already implemented an Electronic Health Record (EHR) as well as practices that are interested in implementing one in the future. Above all, NIPFC is a regional organization of physicians dedicated to improving and maintaining quality health care.

NIPFC’s initial development phase is identifying and meeting with physician groups willing to unite for this cause. Our NIPFC website is meant to educate and orientate Illinois healthcare providers on the goals of a RHIO, as well as to acquaint individuals with operational RHIOs across the country.

On an even grander scale, NIPFC held the first annual Illinois Healthcare Information Technology Summit on February 25, 2006. Promoting all that the new Information Technology can do for the patients of Illinois, the Summit:
• Introduced the latest Information Technology advances in healthcare
• Promoted collaboration in regional and statewide Health Information Exchange Initiatives
• Exposed civic leaders across the state to these efforts
